"Potential is nice, but hauling a suitcase up six flights of stairs in Kyoto when the humidity is 98 percent? Not so gorgeous."
potential is definitely a marketing buzzword. The reality is usually a lot sweatier.

"trivial details matter. People who miss them often miss the point entirely though."
I'll concede that, sometimes. Though focusing too hard on tiny things can still blind you to the larger, obvious flaws.
"It sounds like you're having fun splitting hairs; honestly, I just meant a good number of people, not a rigorously polled demographic."
Splitting hairs? It's called noticing when someone uses "a good number" to sound authoritative. That’s a tell.
"That's a strong reaction. I think it's because the scale is so much bigger than we're used to seeing in our everyday lives."
Bigger doesn't equal bad, just different. Folks always freak out when tools change things; it's the core of every panic.
"it's something. A lot of folks say that when a car needs real work."
"Something" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. I suspect it’s code for “I don’t know what’s wrong, and I don’t want to find out.”
"It's always a judgment when someone's downtime looks different from yours. People relax how they can, I guess."
We all have our ways to recharge, and it’s just human nature to judge things we don't quite understand, isn't it?
"I mean, does it even count as relaxation if you’re stressing about high scores? Just wandering around felt more restorative, personally."
It’s totally relaxation if you're engaged, even if it's a competitive kind. It’s just a different flavor, y'know?
